HOMESTEADERS FOR SENIORS

HHTN Is happy to announce a new program we are getting started, thanks to a $2000.00 grant from Connections of Hawkins and Handcock Counties, “HOMESTEADERS FOR SENIORS”. A pairing of National Ladies Homesteading the Hawkins County Chapter and HHTN. We are trying to connect seniors in Hawkins County with local homesteaders. The homesteaders bring any extra products they have and want to give away on certain days, times, and places. We try and connect them with seniors who could use the product, and best of all it is at no cost to the seniors. This is a win win for everyone. The seniors who are on a fixed income can get free fresh produce (which is better for them), and products such as soaps, lotions, breads and much more . The homesteaders have an opportunity to meet locals who may have knowledge they could use. Seniors get to socialize and share their knowledge with folks who are interested, and prayerfully great friendships begin.

The reasoning for this is that Hawkins County is one of the lowest counties in the state to have easily accessed services for seniors. With very little public transportation, a high rate of poverty, and broken families it is hard for seniors to get to farmers markets, and the cost of fresh produce makes it prohibitive for them to get. They also tend to be more isolated which could cause psychological problems such as depression.

We are trying to alleviate some of this by bringing the fresh produce and products to the senior and talking with them while they are choosing the items. Hopefully it can bring about some long term friendships between the homesteaders and the seniors.
